Learning Magic

Blue Magic is unlike other colour magic. You do not purchase or read scrolls in order to learn it. Instead, you must physically witness the ability and defeat your adversary to obtain these azure techniques.

First thing you’ll want is a “learning kit” of sorts, a set of equipment especially for learning spells. The most important thing you’ll need is a low-damage weapon of sorts, preferably a low-delay club or sword. You’ll find many event weapons suffice for this purpose. Later on, as it becomes available, you’ll want to include endurance gear (Jelly Ring, Orochi Nodowa, etc.) as enemy monsters become tougher and have more TP abilities. Lastly,  magic skill gear helps (as magic skill influences learn rate and level) as well as the Magus Bazubands, which add a hard learn rate increase.

Now what? How do you actually learn the spells? Simply attack your target until it uses it. So long as the ability executes completely, you will have a chance of learning once your target is dead.

A couple pointers:

  • Blue Mage must be set as the main job.
  • You can learn spells above your level, so long as they are within 30 magic skill levels*.
  • You, or an alliance member, must land the killing blow.
  • You can learn spells off monsters that don’t reward EXP.
  • You can learn spells in Dynamis, Limbus, Einherjar, and Salvage.
  • You can learn spells in Besieged, but not Campaign.

*Before level 50, this means you can learn spells up to 9 levels above you, so long as your magic skill is capped. This drops to 5 levels once level 50 is hit. Skill obtained from gear and merits factors into the range.

The monster from which you learn a spell is largely irrelevant, although for safety purposes, you should always target monsters that you can take hits from but aren’t that dangerous. “Too Weak” to “Decent Challenge” generally make for the best targets, depending on the spell. Be aware that at higher levels especially, there won’t always be a soloable target available, so some help will be required for some spells (like Exuviation and Asuran Claws).

The Blue Mage Hunting Grounds is the best resource you’ll find online for spell-hunting camps.
