Pros

  • Light Arts, Dark Arts: These make every last of your /SCH spells useful
  • Sublimation: Your very own personal mini-convert
  • MP bonus, Conserve MP, Stratagems: The ultimate in MP conservation
  • Regen II, Protect II, Raise, Reraise, Dispel (ranged!), Sleep (ranged!)
  • /SCH cures are more powerful than /WHM cures thanks to Light Arts
  • Aspir and Drain, in addition to MP Drainkiss and Magic Hammer
  • Sneak and Invisible
  • Campaign juggernaut

Cons

  • Cap on magic skills (with active arts) is 246, not 256
  • Little melee benefits
  • While Elemental Magic skill is respectable with Dark Arts up, the best nuke available is Water II
  • No Erase (compared to /WHM)
  • Few enfeebles and buffs (compared to /WHM, /RDM, /BLM)

With the exception of Barspells and Erase, /SCH is better than /WHM for healing on BLU in every way. With Light Arts active, BLU has a cap of 246 Healing Magic, providing much more potent cures. If you’re looking to maximise your cure efficiency, /SCH is the way to go. Healing over 500 for only 72 MP (or less if Conserve MP kicks in) should guarantee a BLU/SCH a spot in the tank party instead of a second WHM. As far as campaign goes, BLU/SCH pushes MP efficiency to the limit: between Refresh (Auto Refresh, Sigil, Mirage Jubbah, Karasutengu Kogake), Sublimation, MP Drainkiss, and Aspir, you should have literally no problems with MP. Stack on damage reduction gear (including the new Patronus Ring) and simply Magic Fruit to shrug away the damage. The new Sturm’s Report item will also help with landing your /SCH spells. On a random note, BLU/SCH is a very effective job in the Assault mission Lamia No.13.

Scholar is a viable support job starting level 20 and remains so until level 75.
